Classroom Remodel

Early Childhood Education Center

Spring Valley Campus Buildings

Location

Glenwood Springs, CO

Summary

DCPS completed a comprehensive remodel of three classrooms The project introduced ADA-accessible restrooms, new in-class offices, and increased natural light through the installation of storefront glass. Upgraded finishes—including birch shelving, antimicrobial laminate cabinetry, and solid surface countertops—enhanced both aesthetics and functionality.

Challenge

The existing early childhood classrooms faced significant functional limitations. Two of the three rooms lacked natural light, creating a dim and less engaging learning atmosphere. Additionally, ADA-accessible restrooms were not available within the immediate classroom area, and staff offices were located outside of the center, disrupting workflow and collaboration. The layout limited efficiency and comfort for both educators and students.

Solution

DCPS collaborated closely with the educational facility’s design and architectural teams to reimagine the early childhood center into a bright, inclusive, and functional space. The installation of storefront glass between classrooms allowed natural light to flood previously enclosed rooms, creating a warm and open environment. Two new offices were strategically added within the center, enabling direct oversight of the classrooms and improving daily operations. The remodel also introduced two new restrooms, including one that is fully ADA-compliant, offering accessibility and convenience. Premium materials such as birch open shelving, antimicrobial laminate cabinetry, and solid surface countertops enhanced both aesthetics and hygiene. Updated paint and flooring completed the transformation, giving the space a fresh, modern, and inviting look.

DCPS began the project with detailed coordination between the architect, administration, and site-based management to ensure the remodel aligned with program needs and accessibility standards. Due to permit review delays, the team operated under a compressed five-week timeline, requiring exceptional efficiency and scheduling precision.

Materials were fast-tracked to meet deadlines, and work was executed in continuous phases, with crews operating extended hours to maintain momentum. The project involved full demolition of existing classroom interiors, installation of new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to support the added restrooms, and finish carpentry for custom millwork. Despite the tight schedule, DCPS delivered a high-quality renovation on time, transforming the early childhood wing into a light-filled, accessible, and inspiring environment for students and staff alike.
