Summary
DCPS Asphalt & Concrete completed coordinated summer improvements at three Douglas County elementary schools. The work included concrete repairs, parking lot and playground mill and overlay, geotextile paving fabric installation, root mitigation, striping, and restoration of playground court markings. Crews adjusted schedules to accommodate added scope while maintaining safe access for summer programs and neighborhood use. Through close communication and careful coordination across multiple campuses, DCPS completed the work within the district’s limited summer construction window.
Challenge
Although the projects were scheduled during summer break, the campuses remained active with childcare programs, school events, and neighborhood use. DCPS also received a significant increase in concrete scope shortly before work began, requiring the team to revise an already compressed schedule. Concrete, asphalt, striping, and specialty fabric installation all had to be carefully coordinated within the district’s two-month completion window.
Solution
DCPS created a phased schedule that prioritized the added concrete work before paving began. Crews adjusted workdays, added weekend shifts, and coordinated across all three campuses to keep the projects moving safely and efficiently. Playground and parking lot surfaces were milled and repaved, court markings were restored, and a bio-barrier was installed to help redirect tree roots away from the new pavement. Regular communication kept the district informed throughout the changing schedule.
DCPS began by coordinating work areas and access requirements with the district so each campus could remain safe during summer programming and community use. Work zones were secured and sequenced to limit interaction between construction operations and school visitors.
Crews completed the expanded concrete scopes before beginning the asphalt improvements. This included designated concrete, curb, gutter, sidewalk, and preparation work required ahead of paving.
The asphalt process included milling the existing surfaces, preparing the milled areas, coordinating installation of the specified geotextile paving fabric, and placing the new asphalt. Playground surfaces received a two-inch mill and overlay to create a smooth, functional surface appropriate for play and athletic activities. Court lines and playground markings were then repainted to restore the finished areas.
At one site, crews removed sections of playground asphalt to repair damage caused by invasive tree roots. After consulting with DCPS in-house Arborists, the roots were cut back, and crews installed the bio-barrier along the pavement edge before completing the new asphalt surface.
By combining flexible scheduling, clear client communication, and coordinated concrete and asphalt operations, DCPS completed improvements across three active school campuses within the district’s limited summer construction window.
